Compassionate Inverclyde has picked up the Voluntary Organisation of the Year title for the second year in a row at Reach for the Stars 2019, the annual Inverclyde Community Awards initiative, organised by CVS Inverclyde.

The category, sponsored by Inverclyde Life, went out to a hotly contested People's Vote, attracting more than 3,000 votes for five finalists, who had been shortlisted by an independent judging panel back in August, as had finalists and winners in all categories.

Compassionate Inverclyde was awarded a £500 grant from Inverclyde Community Fund, with all other winners picking up trophies, certificates and vouchers. Finalists were awarded certificates, with volunteers also receiving vouchers.

The Reach for the Stars Big Screen Awards Night was held at the Waterfront Cinema Greenock with host for the evening, writer, presenter and commentator, Gerry McDade. Awards in four other volunteer categories went to:

• George Banks of Inverclyde Shed for Volunteer Impact, sponsored by River Clyde Homes;
• Inverclyde Bothy Health Walks Volunteers for Volunteer Team Impact, sponsored by Waterfront Cinema Greenock;
• Inverclyde Family Contact Centre for Citizenship in Action, sponsored by Inverclyde HSCP; and
• Greenock Cut Conservation Volunteers for Environment Culture and Heritage, sponsored by Inverclyde Council

"Our Inverclyde Community Awards are a great showcase for the achievements of voluntary organisations and community groups, as well as individual and team volunteers across Inverclyde," said Charlene Elliott, Chief Executive Officer of CVS Inverclyde.

"We would like to say a huge congratulations to the winners and, indeed, all our finalists, and a big thank you to our sponsor partners and independent judges who were faced with another tremendous challenge in making their selection this year. The Waterfront Cinema team proved excellent hosts once again, creating a relaxed, fun evening, as people joined us with their colleagues, family and friends.

"Films shot by Chris Bradley and his West College Scotland students were the icing on the cake for the Big Screen Awards Night, helping us pay tribute to people who make such a valuable contribution in many remarkable ways to local life, work and play here in Inverclyde."

As well as category sponsors, partners in the Big Screen Awards Night were West College Scotland, Volunteer Inverclyde, Millions, Riverside Inverclyde, Inverclyde Community Development Trust and Inverclyde Community Fund.

A prize draw on the evening raised more than £700 for the Inverclyde Community Fund, thanks to donations from Cardwell Garden Centre, Waterfront Cinema Greenock, Ronnie Cowan, Inverclyde Life, Volunteer Inverclyde and CVS Inverclyde.

The Waterfront Cinema rounded off the awards evening with film treat, Last Christmas.
