Inverclyde Child Poverty Action Group
School Age Payment - is part of the Best Start Grant, a package of three payments that will give extra money to low income families during the early years of a child's life. It is a £250 payment made around the time a child normally starts Primary 1 to help with the costs of a child starting school. The money can be used for anything from school uniform and shoes to a school bag, books or days out.
Applications are now open and will remain open until 28 February 2021. Parents who have deferred entry to August 2021 should still apply in the 1 June 2019 to 28 February window. If they wait until after then it will be too late and they will miss out on their payment.
Social Security Scotland is reaching out to this group to see how best it can ensure as many parents, carers and families in Inverclyde receive notification of this.
As you will know last year I visited many nurseries, schools and out of school clubs to raise awareness and assist where necessary in the application process. As a result of Covid-19 this has not been possible. Therefore it would be good to have a conversation with members of this group - nurseries, schools and out of school clubs; to see how we can share things such as the social media posts, perhaps through things like; My School AP, text messages via schools etc. (links to resources, www.socialsecurity.gov.scot/what-we-do/stakeholder-resources/best-start-grant-school-age-payment).
I am also aware that there is likely to be many more families now entitled to qualifying benefits to receive this grant that previously would not have been entitled, so getting this information out once the window opens is important. NB applications in advance of 01.06.2020 will be declined and a new application would be required therefore sharing now so that we can get prepared.
