Reflecting on Scottish Learning Disability Week 2026

As Scottish Learning Disability Week comes to a close, we are looking back on a week that highlighted the voices, experiences and contributions of people with learning disabilities across Inverclyde.
This year's theme, 'I am here... to be seen', focused on visibility, recognition and inclusion. It was a reminder that everyone should have opportunities to participate in community life, be heard, and be valued for who they are.
Preparations for the week began several months ago. In June, Emily, our Marketing Assistant and Content Creator, introduced Scottish Learning Disability Week at the Learning Disability Network, sharing information about the national theme and outlining plans for local activity throughout the week.
Why the Theme Matters
Learning Disability Week kicked off with exploring the theme for this year ‘I am here… to be seen.’ From the focus of this theme, it was important to emphasise why raising awareness of Scottish learning disability week matters to Inverclyde’s communities.
For many people with learning disabilities, visibility is about having opportunities to take part, make choices, access support when needed and be treated with dignity and respect. Scottish Learning Disability Week provides an opportunity to listen and consider how we can create communities where everyone feels valued.
Celebrating Across Inverclyde
The CVS Inverclyde team would like to thank individuals within the area who shared their lived experiences through local organisations and community groups. These celebrations included a cinema visit, community BBQ and an open door to fun activities for all. Building understanding through activities such as these will ensure we create a Scotland where people with learning disabilities are seen and respected.
Thank you to those local organisations who organised events, shared resources or highlighted the week's messages on social media. This collective effort will help to breaks down barriers and encourage an more inclusive society.
