An Aspiring Artist Volunteering in Greenock

Tommaso, 23, first discovered The Wyllieum through a weekly art group. After spending time at the gallery, he was invited to join the volunteering team as a gallery guide and Italian translator, an opportunity that combined his passion for art with the chance to support visitors from both Inverclyde and further afield.

Since becoming a volunteer, Tommaso has enjoyed learning more about George Wyllie's work alongside the gallery's changing exhibitions and visiting artists.

"I enjoy learning all the time," he said, adding that one of the highlights of the role is being able to share that knowledge with visitors and tourists.

Although he had always been interested in art, volunteering at The Wyllieum introduced Tommaso to a career path he hadn't previously considered. The experience has helped him think differently about his future and the opportunities available within the arts and culture sector.

Volunteering has also allowed him to gain valuable workplace experience in a supportive environment while strengthening his CV.

"It's been a great opportunity and a great experience," Tommaso explained.

Beyond developing practical skills, volunteering has also had a positive impact on his confidence.

Meeting new people and speaking with visitors has helped him become more comfortable socially, and he says the experience has been particularly helpful in managing social anxiety.

When asked whether he would recommend volunteering to others, his answer was simple:

"I absolutely would."

During our conversation, we also introduced Tommaso to the Saltire Awards, the Scottish Government's programme recognising the achievements of young volunteers. Having not heard about the awards before, he has now signed up and is logging his volunteering hours towards his first Saltire certificate.

Tommaso's story is a great example of how volunteering can open doors to new experiences, build confidence and help people discover interests and opportunities they may never have considered.
